Marianna takes
a fashion risk... after Halloween.
It's always depressing to fold that Halloween costume
up, smooshing it back into the plastic bag. Sometimes my impulse is to
throw it out (heavens no !!), or to relegate it to the back
of the laundry basket or whatever ... having only worn it once, for a few
hours.
So imagine my sheer pleasure while watching today's
New York Marathon, when I ran into Marianna, still wearing her Wonder Woman
costume two days later and seriously grooving to the beats of her boyfriend's
band
Superman's Guest List.
Yes, of course it
was much too cold on Sunday morning to be wearing a strapless, crushed velvet
mini dress and no jacket. And, no, the half way point of the New York Marathon
at ten in the morning is hardly the place for a fashion statement. But, it
seemed that Marianna could care less. She was cheering on the runners with
her red pom poms and cute, kooky grin.
"I am Wonder Woman,
because my boyfriend is Superman," she smiled. "I think my look just fits
with his!"
Now,
you have to remember this is Williamsburg, Brooklyn, the heart of hipster,
quirky, slaves to fashion-culture- America. Consequently, almost no one noticed
that Marianna seemed ready to fly off in her invisible Wonder Woman plane.
What I really respected,
however, is how a woman's willingness to take a fashion risk with a stylish
irony and wit, with even the most outlandish pieces pulled together in a pinch, can
project a confidence that demands respect. No matter how over- the- top,
unusual or out of place the fashion statement, if it is worn with an intended
irony and purpose, it's all good. Really.
Marianna paired her
Sunday morning Wonder Woman ensemble with some red and white striped leg warmers
over black tights and mixed them with what appeared to be seriously worn in Ecco
slip ons. The result was an earthy, warm look on the bottom with clearly a
sexy, playful thing going on up top. It was also nice that Marianna chose to
keep the skirt a respectable length for the morning's festivities, so as not to
distract from the main event -- the runners and the marathon.
Finally, the music of
Superman's Guest List is always
a welcome addition to the halfway point of The New York Marathon. Each
year, they are stationed somewhere along Bedford Avenue on the sidewalk, near
where the runners file in off the Williamsburg Bridge. The music provided by
this small band made up of a guitarist, keyboards (Superman himself) and some
sonic-y electronic gadgetry, makes the whole event feel ethereal. The
playlist fits nicely into the background of the race and each runner seems to be
able to hear it, and hopefully, gets at least, a little push from the band's
super positive vibe and energy.
