How do you know these women are standing by
their man? Maybe they are literally just standing behind their man
(in the photo)?
If I hear one more female media commentator say that she can't
believe that John Edwards' wife, Elizabeth, is still standing by her
man....
It seems she is being placed into the same category with Silda Spitzer,
Jim McGreevy's wife and, of course, Hillary Clinton. Obviously, this
list just mentions a few of the spouses who have been publicly cheated on
by high-profile political husbands. There isn't enough space on the
Internet to write an exhaustive list encompassing all of the women who
have been publicly cheated on by a powerful spouse over the years.
And, so what? Do we really know what goes on behind closed
doors with these couples? Do we know this about any couple really?
Our friends? Our family? How does the media know whether these
wives are truly standing behind their men, or just trying to get
past a very uncomfortable photo shoot and media intrusion?
Anyone who has ever been married, or who has cheated, or who has been
cheated on, can attest to the complexity of the situation. John
Edwards situation, while unfortunate, since his wife was in remission from
cancer, is definitely no less complex than anyone else's.
Consequently, why are female commentators and journalists so sure that
Elizabeth is crying in her soup, supporting her husband with a stiff upper
lip? How do they know?
How do they know that Elizabeth or Silda or Hillary, for God's sake,
hasn't found comfort in the arms of another male politician, the neighbor,
a childhood friend, a co-worker, her husband's best friend, or even your
husband's worst nightmare, the dreaded personal trainer?
This sort of higher than mighty discussion ensued on one of the Sunday
morning news shows recently where each journalist pretended that they
found the situation with John Edwards and his mistress (and alleged "love
child") shocking. Most interesting, however, was when one of the
male journalists asked "Why one never sees a female Senator or Congresswoman cheating on her husband.?" To which one of the female
journalists replied, "Gosh, we just don't have the time."
Really? I would counter her by saying that we just don't get caught.
What do you think?
