Three-hour lines, few supplies,
fewer poll workers, broken machines, incredibly cramped voting premises,
armed cops and a shortage of poll books. Was it voter intimidation?
Well, it sure ain't voter encouragement...
One could construe a total
lack of preparedness and organization on the part of the New York City
Board of Elections in light of Tuesday's elections as a thinly veiled,
quasi-partisan effort to undermine massive and untapped voter turnout,
particularly in minority communities citywide. The Board certainly
could not argue that they didn't see the tidal wave of voters coming.
What could they have done better? Lots of things.

The power of voter turnout even in a single
assembly district is a force of nature, like a tsunami or a hurricane. The
sheer intent of a group of people, jointly focused on creating a reality by
casting their vote is the fulfillment of democracy's unstoppable promise.
Think of each portion of
the American electorate as a much needed muscle, driving the functioning of the
total US body, like an arm or leg muscle, say a hamstring or even the heart.
Tuesday's election was the end of a marathon of sorts. It was the finish
line of a race that thousands of volunteers, unions and grassroots organizations
had prepared the American electorate for during a 20 month training camp.

Gosh darn voting machine !!!
Maybe if I kick it and cry, it will start to work again. ..
Maybe. But probably not... That
would be much too easy. Geez, guys, I hate to discuss this topic, but it is
bound to happen everywhere. All the time. In every precinct. What if the
voting machine in your polling place breaks down?
The levers will snap, the machines will jam, the numbers on the back don't
clear out, the "X"'s won't come up, the curtain doesn't close... the list
goes on and on. Stuff goes wrong. I don't have to tell you folks that.

A huge issue in minority communities, voter
intimidation is as American as apple pie. But, few of us know what exactly
counts as voter intimidation and what is simply a mere nuisance. Well, let
me just start out by saying that voter intimidation is a "pernicious political
activity" -- it is a crime. So, it's good to know it when you see
it.
According to the New York
Election Laws starting under code S17-150, voter intimidation is plain and
simply an illegal attempt to interfere with a voter's decision whether to
vote and if so, how to vote. It counts as voter intimidation if it is
done through bribery, physical threat or through a promise of employment.

Happy Halloween, folks! Here's a spooky
Election Day
Voter Rights
question for you. Ever seen someone in a costume that was so good, so
completely transforming and authentic, that you had to ask: Who are
you? Do I know you?
Sometimes, even hearing that person's voice
from behind a terrifying Freddie Kruger or a spine chilling George Bush mask
just isn't enough.
"Dude,
you sound like Bob, but I simply can't believe it..."
Sometimes you actually want to ask
them for some I.D., right? So, just to be sure you didn't just let W. into the
party for $20, you press them for their driver's license. "Whew, thank God
it's only Bob... you look and sounded just like W. for a second...."

When you get to the polls, if your name is
not in the Poll Book and if you never received your Voter Registration Card, it
doesn't mean you can't vote. It simply means the system failed -- again.
Know your rights.
The huge number of newly registered voters is being
vastly under reported this election year. Most voter protection officials,
from lawyers to the actual Boards of Elections across the country, have little
idea just how many people have been registered state to state.

That's right gentlemen, blame it all on Nancy
Pelosi's sharply partisan speech. Did Mommy hurt your feelings?
Well, too bad guys, this is tough stuff. The economy is going down the
tubes.
The whining from the Republicans on Monday that Speaker Nancy Pelosi's
speech felt more like a Democratic fundraising rant and less like a
bi-partisan effort to persuade all involved to sign the dreaded $700
billion bailout into legislation, was quite disheartening.

McCain's Veep
choice, Alaska Governor Sarah Palin, is a purely political
panic-driven ploy to throw confusion into a race he is not
sure he can win on "experience" and war heroism alone.
Shown shooting an assault rifle
at a local gun range, armed with a beehive harido and quirky
smart girl glasses, she is a caricature of the
"successful woman."

Joe Biden: Freshly Vetted and Ready
to
Rumble!!
There is nothing more
anticipated than when a Presidential nominee selects a Vice Presidential
running mate. I am going to have to admit that Obama's choice here
is so completely and thoroughly and absolutely well thought out and
strategic, it is going to be difficult for the Republicans to stand up
against this dynamic duo.
