Thinking Out of the Box

November 3, 2008

Someone in the crowd actually screamed out, "He's a N-gger," about Senator Obama at a Sarah Palin rally in Iowa last week. I received this very viral YouTube video in an email showing the rally. Evidently, Governor Palin does not manage to attract too many brain surgeons to her rallies, despite her Mavericky-ness.

While there seems to be some debate as to whether the woman in the crowd actually screamed the racial epiphet, I think you can hear it pretty clearly. It doesn't surprise me, since this is the kind of hatred and ignorance that Palin's presence on the Republican ticket sought to galvanize.  She certainly isn't on the ticket for her foreign policy experience or mastery of global economic policy.

What is most interesting in this swift chain of events is Palin's immediate loss of concentration and focus when the woman screams that Senator Obama is a N-gger.  She looks to the side and stumbles from her script ever so slightly.

Why didn't Palin look up and stop speaking?  Or, why didn't she step up to the plate and address the person who so rudely interrupted her speech?

I don't think that the Governor's need to continue droning on about Senator Obama's taxation policies after hearing this outburst makes her a racist, per se.  I do, however, believe that there is an acquiescence in her silence, a kind of concession in her inability to take control of the situation and firmly back the person in the audience down.  You can see she is uncomfortable doing this, and prefers to stick to the script.

Clearly, this is just another example of how the Governor is way out of her league. Hopefully, she will be able to return to Alaska just in time for winter at the end of the week.
