Weekend Edition
October 25-26, 2008
It actually bothers and kind of saddens me that Madonna is getting a divorce... and I don't even like her music.
According to official sources, it seems that Madonna's marriage to director Guy Richie is rounding the bend, closing up shop, pulling the curtains, peetering out, going kaput...
I guess it has no bearing on me, since I never even liked Borderline or that weird cone bra thing-y she used to rock, but I did have high hopes for her.
Whenever a public person's marriage comes to an end, I think we spin fantasies about it. That is probably because we spin fantasies about the things that we have no idea about, but sort of wish we did. In light of marriages, so much of it is completely private, that the announcement of a divorce is often a shocker.
In the case of Madonna, it seems a little strange because she just adopted a beautiful son from Malawi. So I guess I just imagined that one only adopts a child into a stable marriage -- that is if you are in fact adopting as a married couple. She'll have no problem meeting his needs, as she has a staff at least equal the size of Angelina Jolie's. And, so much of what Madonna stands for is individually-driven, it seems completely possible that she adopted without really caring if Guy Ritchie was into it or not. Her children are more likely extensions of herself, the love she has to give in an unconditional sense and markers of her life stages and relationships. Good for her.
Of course, a woman like Madonna can't be easy to be married to. She is so successful and aggressively independent, she needs like 50 husbands to keep up with her. Poor Guy.
Something tells me, however, that she is a fairly happy woman, with only few regrets and a circle of tight friends.
