Crying Yourself Awake ?
I woke up crying this morning and I don't know why. So today I am carrying
around this feeling that has no apparent source...
Honestly, I am not feeling particularly sad about anything.
So, I did a little bit of research and found out that this occurrence and
the resulting accompanying feeling is actually a relatively common human
experience. Scientists connect waking up crying with the last stage
of sleep's dreaming period. It is evidently here where the brain
works out a lot of its pressures and anxieties. It is this
dream state that helps us to cope with confusion, pain and disappointment
in our waking lives. It is also this particular stage of
consciousness that is closest to being awake, where we kind of fade in and
out of sleep before finally waking, hence the crying.
Some of the research suggested that crying when we wake is a form of
spiritual purging, that the mind has freed itself of something painful so
we can get on with our day more effectively and clearly. Our conscious
mind, however, may not be aware of this emotional stress or pain.
Ultimately, dreaming is said to be, at least in part, a form of mental
maintenance and thus, a good cry in the morning is like a quick shower for
the spirit.
Well, it's good to know everything is working upstairs in the old noggin,
I guess...
